About Our Wool

We get lots of questions about our wool.  Maybe you have wondered, too, what kind of wool we use and where it comes from.

First of all, be assured that when we say 100% wool, it means 100% wool.  Contrary to rumor, it is unlawful to label a product as 100% wool if it is not 100% wool.

All our woolens are hand-selected based on almost 30 years experience rug hooking and stitching.  We don't buy any woolens that are too loosely woven to hold together when cut in narrow strips nor do we offer styles of yardage that might present unexpected challenges, styles such as boucles, gabardines, etc.

Remember that almost all woolen fabric requires pre-washing (felting, fulling) prior to cutting into either strips for rug hooking or shapes for applique.  See our Online Workshop pages for detailed instructions.    Of course, our Hand Dyed Wools are already felted or fulled, so you don't need to do it yourself.

On the other hand, it is not recommended that you machine wash any wool fabric, ours or anyone else's, whether or not it has already been hand-dyed, felted/shrunk or not.  Dry cleaning is the safest method of cleaning wool.  If you are brave and want to try washing in water in a basin or tub, use a wool-friendly detergent, tepid or cool water, and no agitation.  Rinse thoroughly in same temperature water.  Soak up excess moisture with a white of light colored Turkish towel (to avoid color staining of wool) and dry flat.  There are no guarantees but you may have good results.
